Green Tint Blue Shade Solar Wthird Visor Band

  • #1

Front windshield is severely cracked. Is Safelite recommend or should I use a VW part?

Safelite offers three options. Price is installed.
Green Tint - Rain Sensor, Solar, W/Third Visor Band, Soundproofing $377
Green Tint - Solar, W/Third Visor Band, Soundproofing $353
Green Tint/Gray Shade - Solar, W/Third Visor Band, Soundproofing $420

My gieco plan only requires I pay 50.00 for any the above safelight windows. Geico will only cover OEM windshield part for up to 291.10 and then cover the install.

Unsure what the gray shade is referring to?

If insurance is paying, I would go with OEM, no question about it.

Safelight offered me OEM glass option as well...you should ask them about it

  • #4

Yep, they can get OEM glass if you ask.

Safelite is fine. Just make sure that the mirror is reattached permanently.

Not a fan of Safelite glass on a car that isn't a beater. Go OEM or premium aftermarket if you don't mind paying extra.

It isn't Safelite glass; it is OEM quality replacement, usually made by Pilkington. Safelite has replaced my windshield twice already on my '12 Golf (lots of crap flying around DC roads...). I have free glass replacement through USAA so I make full use of it.

Both of the windshields I received were Pilkington (OEM supplier for both VW and Audi) and were great quality.

Pilkington is good glass, for sure.

Agreed!

I agree, too, but I cannot say I have seen any as OEM on a VAG product. Sekurit (sp?) is the one I usually see.

Geico - only covers $291.10 for OEM part. Waiting in Safelite to give me a part quote.

Geico really pushed that the quality was the same and the only difference was the logo..... :(. Just hush up and give me the cost!

Geico covered OEM for me.

In the windshield markings, there is a DOT ## code. that number is a code for the manufacturer.

In my case, the OE Manufacturer was St. Gobain. THe glass company got the OEM glass for me.

Yeah, St. Gobain Securit (I just looked on a windshield of a car here). Not sure if that is a joint venture or an offshoot or a merger of the old Securit or not.

Sekurit and St. Gobain is the same company.

And there ya go. They must have merged a while ago, because all my old Volkswagens (the ones with the engines in the correct end of the car) never had the St. Gobain part on their glass.

Thanks for that info.

I know they are not as common as St Gobain these days, but they are still an OE supplier ;)

The vast majority of the Group's OE production is focused on the volume light vehicle industry, serving all of the world's major vehicle manufacturers (VMs), including Toyota, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, VW, Renault/Nissan, Fiat, Honda, PSA Peugeot-Citroën and BMW, together with their respective subsidiary brands.

Thanks for doing the Google legwork. I did a cursory glance but didn't find all of the stuff that you did. Bye bye marketing spammers! :)
